Epic Games Launcher Confirmed for SteamOS and Steam Deck

Players using Valve’s handheld hardware will soon have native storefront access, as Epic Games Launcher is officially heading to SteamOS. While the Linux-compatible launcher is still currently in its preview phase, Epic Games has outlined broader distribution plans that include Valve’s popular gaming operating system.

What distributions will the new Epic Games Launcher support?

Communications Director Jake Jones confirmed the expanding hardware and OS compatibility to GamingOnLinux. In addition to SteamOS, the upcoming launcher aims to support a wide array of Linux distributions, specifically mentioning Fedora, Cachy, and Omarchy. Epic is actively testing packaging formats for distribution and plans to restore AppImage support.

Previously, Epic mentioned it was looking into making its ecosystem compatible with Valve’s Linux-based system. While the storefront is making its way to the platform, it is worth noting that complete game compatibility—particularly for titles like Fortnite—remains a separate hurdle.

Does this mean Fortnite is coming to Steam Deck?

Not quite yet. Although the Epic Games Launcher is making its way to SteamOS, getting games like Fortnite running natively on the Steam Deck depends heavily on anti-cheat solutions. Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) Linux v2 support remains an unresolved bottleneck. Epic previously stated that the Steam Deck “does not support the required features for our EAC v2 solution,” though conversations with Valve are ongoing.

  • Epic Games Launcher will officially support SteamOS and Steam Deck.
  • The launcher is currently still in preview.
  • Other supported Linux distros will include Fedora, Cachy, and Omarchy.
  • Fortnite’s status on Steam Deck is still uncertain due to anti-cheat requirements.
